The price of quilting....$60 trivet

A while back our guild had a workshop where we were supposed to make a Judy Neimeyer table runner.  Now, I don't decorate with quilting stuff, but I wanted to get to know people, and the best way to do that is be involved, take classes and go to retreats. Since I don't decorate with quilting stuff, and had no real plans for this my brilliant plan was to use stash fabrics.  Good plan, except and no one told me that scrappy was probably not a good idea.  We had the most delightful teacher, Brenda Hall.  She is talented, entertaining and she would even rip out if you put something together wrong.  Pretty cool don't you think?  Here's a couple of pictures of Brenda and the Judy Neimeyer quilts that she has done.

Lucky Tita!!  Here is her table runner before I quilted it, but
it's FINISHED!!  Way to go Tita!!

This pathetic looking thing is mine.  lol!!  I did manage to do two of the outside curving (is that really a word?) flying geese.  But I had had enough, and didn't want to do any more of that stuff!!

Here's mine.....also all FINISHED!!  They boys love to use it when they grab hot things out of the microwave.  It's my trivet, and I like it.

Class...............$40
Pattern.............$20
Getting to know people who quilt.....priceless!
I still have the pattern and pick it up every now and then.  I really like it, but I think my fabric choice wasn't a good one.  I'm thinking I might make a couple more trivets for my new kitchen.  They are wonderful trivets, this one has already been wash hundreds of times.  Still don't think I'm gonna do those curving flying geese....

thanks for checking on me...
hugs,
joanne

love to hear what you've got to say.....

I really do like your scrappy trivet. Anyone can do a controlled trivet, but not everyone can do a pleasing-to-the-eye trivet. Good job in just stopping and not letting it become a UFO that you have no interest in completing. Judy C

Tita's runner is beautiful! And your little trivet is too! Better to finish it off like that than leave it as a UFO forever! LOL

Actually, I love your scrappy version (and even liked it with the partial flying geese done around the edge). :)

Ha ha... I saw somewhere how much a quilt really costs in terms of supplies and work. I can't imagine ever selling one at "what it is worth"
Glad I enjoy making them.

Great trivet! Excellent breakdown of expenses. I once took a mystery quilt class...the gal had the measurements wrong when she gave out the instructions. It took 2 trips to the fabric shop because we were given the wrong yardage. LOL! It was such a mystery that mine turned into a mystery pillow. Had a fun day with the quilters though!Hahahahahahaha!!!

Beautiful quilts, I don't know if I will ever do quilts that require exact piecing, I have no patience;)

I really admire the skill and patience that goes into making these blocks, I haven't tried them myself however! At least you gave it a go and have something useful to show for it at the end of the day!!!

Enjoyed seeing the quilts, and your triviet is wonderful. When enough is enough...it is enough and well..you made the most of it.

I love your scrappy choice! Scrappy is my favorite in quilts. Some things are not for everyone and that is a-okay. I am not a fan of mystery quilts, and after wasting money and time on some bad ones, I no longer do them. No problem, though, as there is so many beautiful things to make!! Fun post, Joanne!

It's a great trivet. I can only do about an hour of paper piecing then I'm over it. I wish I could handle it more since Judy N. has so many beautiful patterns. I even own two of them before I discovered I really don't like PPing.
